Pilates is an excellent tool for rehabilitating injuries. Essentially it is a mind and body centering technique that emphasises the importance of beginning movement from a central core of stability, namely the lumbo-pelvic region. From this central core, the Pilates method works by adjusting the intensity of each exercise through the use of differing limb movements and resistance with the use of equipment.
Clinical Pilates differs from standard Pilates only in that the principles have been adapted to improve the safety and effectiveness of the exercises, and highlight the key elements that actually do improve back and neck pain.
The aim of Clinical Pilates is to assess the movement and control of the lower back and pelvic region, then use specific exercises to help correct the problem areas. These basic exercises use sub-maximal muscle co-contraction (gentle low-level exercises of several muscles at the same time). The focus is to teach the brain to recruit the correct muscle groups and find the correct pattern of movement, as recent evidence shows that poor control and endurance of the core muscles are associated with low back pain.
